What else I ❤️️
Adidas
Adidas finally (finally) spoke out and cut ties with a certain rapper celebrity. I've captured a few of the articles and commentary and sharing here.
Over 180K people signed this Change.org petition for Adidas to end their partnership.
Some of the best context and analysis I read was from this NYTimes article with multiple journalists reporting.
WWD article on the end of the partnership and the Business of Fashion article here and here.
I've heard quotes that Adidas had $250M in annual sales from the Yeezy Brand. And this WSJ article mentions that it represented about 8% of the Adidas bottom line (this WSJ article has a great business analysis of what has happened with Adidas and Nike and their ties with personalities that are antisemitic.) Of course they had to figure out how to handle this, but morally they needed to speak up first and then figure out the rest of the financials. Companies like The RealReal shared they would not resale the products.
Fans now grapple with what to do with their shoes and Yeezy merchandise etc.
Here’s an idea - for any influencers that have made money off of Gap, Adidas, Balenciaga or any of you know who's collabs and businesses (he also has 5% ownership of Skims) I would suggest announcing that you won’t support that/him going forward and donate all funds from those links etc to Anti Defamation League etc.
This LinkedIn post by an Adidas employee was one of the most powerful things to me. Camhi was brave in posting this about her current employer. What do you do when you are so misaligned with your employer?
Above Instagram story post from @geethanksjustboughtitpod - Love that Harry Styles made a statement. Rocking his Vans during this time period vs his regular Adidas sneakers.
Ballet Flats & Flats to love
I love flats and found so many fabulous articles about this classic trending again.
Forever a ballet flats fan - from the Glossy Pop Newsletter with 38.8 million views of #balletflats on Tiktok.
These are the hot “in the know” (expensive) ballet slippers to wear now.
The WSJ rounds up chic flats for when you would rather wear heels.
Other fashion/shopping I'm into:
If you are still hunting for your fall boots, this NYTimes article from Vanessa Friedman has great options at a variety of price points.
Also from Vanessa Friedman in the NYTimes, a Blazer for all occasions.
If you are a shopper, this is the email for you.
New launches, collabs, acquisitions & invesments
Launched:
Baublebar launching Minibar for the littles.
Lisa Says Gah first brick and mortar permanent location in LA with nods to their SF roots
Peloton co-founders launching a new DTC rug brand.
Happy Gift Guide season to all who celebrate
Congrats Berry - Art Life Practice launched at Bloomingdale's.
Collabed:
Perfect classic preppy scandi vibes Barbour x Ganni
Launching Nov 16, Stoney Clover Lane x Juicy Couture.
Recess Pickleball x Leanne Ford. Collection making me want to pick up a new sport
The latest from The Great x Eddie Bauer
Jennifer Fisher x Barbie - bling for your doll.
Stüssy x Dries Van Noten - lounge wear heavy and full of prints.
Acquired
Victoria's Secret acquires lingerie brand Adore Me to appeal to the Gen Z consumer and stay relevant.
And maybe in the future acquisition. Will Kering buy Tom Ford? and via Business of Fashion
Invested
Luxury fashion accessories rental/membership retailer Vivrelle raised $35M for their Series B. As the prices for luxury goods keeps going up, but the desire for the product continues to increase too, consumers will look to "borrow" vs own many of the pieces.
Podcasts worth tuning in to
You are wrong about….Online Shopping
Great episode on telling a story and understanding motivations - Reese Witherspoon with Adam Grant.
A fabulous interview - Olympia Gayot with Hilary Kerr talking J.Crew style and fashion. And a follow up on Who What Wear - J. Crew has a new style icon a la Jenna Lyons. Olympia Gayot. Her favorite jcrew picks.
My ex-coworker and friend Lee Anne Grant, Chief Growth Officer at Babylist, was interviewed for the Retail Gets Real podcast.
What else I ❤️️
A number of strong brave Iranian women unfurled banners for Mahsa Amini at the Guggenheim.
Real estate wordle. I needed some fun this week.
Newest (as in today's) instagram obsession. @newyorkersinthecity kinda feels like Bill Cunningham. Oh I miss him and his commentary on New Yorker's style.
SJP gets political on the set of And Just Like That.
A brand I loved growing up, Espirit, has hired Ana Andjelic as the Chief Brand Officer for a rebrand.
Not that I love this article, but an important reminder that the brands we shop might not be aligned with our values.
I love so many tips on this list. But instead of using them as “rules” I think I will reference when I’m in a rut and pick one or two things to mix it up with.
On Instagram, a leather goods expert breaks down if a bag is worth it.
The CFDA Awards, aka Fashion's Oscars happened this week. All the winners here.
Latest CEO switch up - Michelle Gass is leaving as CEO at Kohl's to become the CEO at Levi's.
Pre-ordered via Kickstarter this new tween magazine, Anyway, for my daughter. I can't wait to read it too.
What's Next?
I'm still getting caught up on all the newsletters I read. I'm not sure what this newsletter cadence will be with the holiday season right around the corner (I mean, we all know how busy Q4 is in the retail world.) I promise when I have both the time and something to say you will hear from me.
Thanks for reading Edition 122.
